Smiling Eyes

When I made a trip to Dalhousie on a Youth Hostel of India Winter camp in January 2009, we made a visit to Amritsar. Enroute from Pathankot to Amritsar, comes a railway crossing.

As we waited for the railway crossing to open, a bus filled with school children stopped near our jeep. The bus was filled with all sardar children with nice turbans. They were all fresh and active ready to face a new day at school.

As we had nothing to do but wait, some of us started taking photos of the children in the bus. The children turned out to be difficult to shoot because no matter how much we tried they just wouldn’t look straight into the camera. They twisted and turned. That is when one of the smaller boy turned smiling mischievously trying to tease us with the evasive smile and that is when I caught him smiling back.

It was a split second shot through our jeep’s window and through the dusty bus window and for a very short time when the boy flashed his smile and smiling eyes
