112 – Ganeshotsav 2009 Special – Bal Gopal Mitra Mandal – Borivali
Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak is responsible for the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav in the present form. He used the Ganesh festival to bring the people together to rally against the British rule back in 1893.
The intention was to give a strong sense of oneness to the people against foreign rule.
After all these years, Ganeshotsav has become a big event but sadly and unfortunately. it has become a show of strength for political parties. I see more banners of political leaders and their chamchas rather than the photo of Lord Ganesh.
I still remember the days in my childhood when we would roam around from pandal to pandal admiring the different beautiful pandals in Mumbai. Now there are more pandals supported by their respective political parties.
The above is from Bal Gopal Mitra Mandal in Vazira Borivali. The banner said it was their 22nd year. A rather colourful Ganesh idol with absolutely no background decoration
